S4 Mobile Laboratories Receives Morgan Startup Grant to Advance Soil Technology Innovation

Akron, OH (April 16, 2025) S4 Mobile Laboratories, a leader in mobile soil analysis solutions, has been awarded a $2,000 Morgan Startup Grant, introduced by Bounce Innovation Hub and funded by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation. The grant will support S4’s ongoing efforts in sales, marketing, and product development. Specific plans for the allocation of the funds are forthcoming, with an update anticipated in fall 2025.

Russell Pier, Technical Sales Manager at S4 Mobile Laboratories, commented, “S4 Mobile Laboratories is honored to be a recipient of the Morgan Startup Grant, introduced to us by Bounce Innovation Hub. This grant will help us, as well as many startups alike, to forward efforts in our company, which would not be possible otherwise. From sales efforts to marketing and product development, the Morgan Startup Grant will play a key role in how our business will grow and develop.”

S4 Mobile Laboratories is recognized for its proprietary Subterra® technology, which includes the Subterra Green and the Subterra Grey. The Subterra Green is a portable soil laboratory that enables rapid, in situ measurement and mapping of soil organic carbon and bulk density, allowing users to improve yields and access carbon markets with real-time data. The Subterra Grey is designed for forensic and archaeological investigations, providing minimally invasive detection of unmarked graves and clandestine burials through advanced spectroscopy and soil analysis. Notable milestones include significant funding from USDA SBIR Phase II and NSF grants, securing a key patent in June 2024, and collaborating with organizations such as Summit Metro Parks, the University of Alberta, and our partners in the EU-funded PHENET project. S4’s technology has also supported sensitive investigations for Indigenous communities and law enforcement, earning recognition in outlets such as The Washington Post and The New York Times.

The Morgan Startup Grants program, established by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation in 2021, provides catalytic seed funding to young businesses through nonprofit partners. The initiative has distributed over 500 microgrants to nearly 500 ventures, serving as a critical engagement tool for new entrepreneurs, expanding access to startup funding, and helping founders move from ideation to action.
