Summit Metro Parks' latest issue of GREEN ISLANDS magazine (Vol. 66 No. 2, MAR-APR '25) features an exciting collaboration between the recent University of Akron graduate, and current Technical Sales Manager for S4, Russell Pier, and Summit Metro Parks, highlighting cutting-edge soil analysis technology that's making waves in forensics and environmental science.

The article summarizes Pier's project for his MA in Applied History and Public Humanities, completed in collaboration with Summit Metro Parks. This work has brought attention to S4 Mobile Laboratories' innovative Subterra Grey system, a technology that's revolutionizing soil intelligence.

Founded in April 2019, S4 Mobile Laboratories quickly established itself as a leader in soil intelligence technology with their flagship product, the Subterra Grey. This mobile soil laboratory, designed for in situ forensic analysis, utilizes visible and near-infrared spectroscopy to measure soil chemical content and compactness, with probes capable of reaching depths up to one meter. As featured in the GREEN ISLANDS article, the Subterra Grey is specifically tailored for forensic and historical sites, boasting a compact and portable design that's ideal for navigating rugged terrain. Its minimally invasive technology ensures minimal disturbance to sensitive sites, making it an invaluable tool for professionals in the field. The device's user-friendly interface, real-time analysis capabilities, and single-operator functionality further enhance its effectiveness in forensic and historical research settings.

Our Subterra Grey system has shown promise in detecting and characterizing unmarked graves, making it a valuable tool for law enforcement and archaeologists. Its applications extend beyond forensics, however. The system can detect fatty materials from animal remains and soil carbon, making it valuable for forensics, agriculture, and archaeology.

The introduction of the Subterra Grey system aligns well with Summit Metro Parks' ongoing conservation efforts. As the park system adapts to changing climates and evolving public engagement, this technology could play a crucial role in understanding and preserving local ecosystems.

S4 Mobile Laboratories has garnered significant support for their innovative work, raising $1.6 million in national and state grants. This funding will likely contribute to the continued development and refinement of the Subterra technology. By featuring this collaboration in GREEN ISLANDS, Summit Metro Parks demonstrates its commitment to leveraging advanced technology for better understanding and managing its natural resources. The partnership between academic research, and innovative companies like S4 Mobile Laboratories showcases the potential for interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex environmental and historical challenges.

Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking technology and its potential impacts on our local parks and beyond. Download the most recent edition of Green Islands here!
