From Field Measurement to Mapped Insight: How the Subterra Green Supports a Faster Soil Data Workflow

When soil information takes too long to move from the field to a usable map, decision-making slows down.
Many agricultural and environmental teams manage a familiar series of steps: extract samples, label and handle them, coordinate laboratory analysis, wait for results, and then organize those results into a format that can inform a management or assessment decision. Each step is currently necessary for most, but the overall process may make it costly, time consuming, and difficult to respond quickly to field variability or investigate conditions across larger areas.
S4 Mobile Laboratories developed the Subterra Green to create a more connected field-to-insight workflow. The mobile, in-situ soil spectroscopy platform helps teams collect precision, georeferenced soil data across your fields, then view and analyze mapped results through Subterra Insight™. This cuts costs, saves time, and increases the precision of your data helping you create more informed agronomic decisions.
Start with measurement in the field
The Subterra Green uses a push-probe system with a fiber-optic probe to collect soil density as well as visible and near-infrared spectroscopic measurements directly in the soil. One operator controls the probe, and it will take soil health measurements in depth increments down to 90 cm in your soils.
The platform currently measures and maps soil organic carbon, bulk density, and P, K, CEC, and many other soil analytes. S4 is also expanding its analyte capabilities to support additional soil-health and fertility measurements, including work on sulfur, manganese, iron, zinc, boron, copper, aluminum, sodium, pH, organic matter, and more.
This approach is designed to reduce reliance on routine soil core extraction, sample handling, and off-site laboratory analysis while generating dense data sets that can reveal variability across a field and below the surface.
Turn measurements into usable maps
Collecting data is only the first part of the workflow. Teams also need a way to review results in a practical format.
Subterra Insight is the cloud-based software component that supports Subterra hardware. It provides a centralized environment where users can view mapped results, analyze soil chemistry and field variability, and export data for use in other agronomic and analytical tools.
The software operates with a secure, AWS-based data environment. Its machine-learning modeling system continues to be developed and refined for different soil regions, analytes, and conditions.
For the user in the field or office, the value is straightforward: the path from measurement to interpretation becomes more connected. Instead of treating fieldwork and analysis as separate, disconnected stages, teams can work within a single field-to-data process.
Match the platform to the acreage
Not every operation has the same scale or deployment needs. The Subterra Green is available in two configurations.
The Subterra Green Model P is a portable, field-ready push-probe system for targeted soil measurement and mapping. It can support small-scale growers, agronomists, consultants, researchers, and environmental teams conducting focused work across farms or field sites.
The Subterra Green Model U is vehicle-mounted and designed for large-acreage measurement and mapping, solving the issue of the scalability of soil health analysis. The Model U is great for helping teams at CO-OPs, agribusinesses, agronomic service providers, or large farms cover hundreds or thousands of acres more efficiently in the field.
Regardless of configuration, both models connect to Subterra Insight for consistent access to mapped and exportable data.
Put the workflow to work through a pilot
A pilot gives teams a practical way to evaluate the Subterra Green workflow against their own field conditions and priorities. It can help clarify how depth-resolved data, field mapping, and data export could fit into current agronomic, environmental, carbon, or research processes.
A productive pilot starts with a focused conversation:
· What soil health questions are you trying to answer?
· What acreage or site conditions are involved?
· Which soil measurements would be most useful?
· How will your team use the results alongside existing tools and expertise?
Build a more connected soil data process
Soil data should be available in a form that helps people act. By combining in-field measurement, depth-resolved mapping, cloud-based analysis, and exportable results, the Subterra Green and Subterra Insight help agricultural and environmental teams move toward a faster, more connected soil data workflow.
